Austin Lotz

Founder + Goaltending Coach

  • Meet our founder, Austin Lotz. Austin has 15 years of experience coaching goalies. During this time he played 4 years for the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League and 1 year with the Medicine Hat Tigers, where he received multiple community service awards. While playing Jr hockey, he won a gold medal playing for Team Canada at the world U18 hockey tournament in Russia. After JR ‘s Austin went on to play 7 years of pro with stops in the AHL, ECHL and currently the SPHL. Throughout his Pro career, he has attended multiple NHL camps.

    Austin enjoys working with goalies of all ages and levels. He has a good understanding of what each individual goalies needs are and is able to adjust his style of coaching to fit that style. He has worked with multiple levels of goalies ranging from beginners to professionals and his goal is always the same, to make sure his goalies reach their goals. Austin’s vision with Modern Goaltending is to provide the best educational platform for amateurs to pros by providing elite level performance training, nutrition, psychology, representation and on ice performance. Modern Goaltending is a home for goalies who want to be their best and in return will receive elite level service every day.

Hayden Stewart

Owner + Director of Goaltending

  • Hayden grew up in Rockford, IL. For most of his time in youth hockey, he played for the Madison Capitols organization before moving to Team Illinois his first year of U-18 hockey.

    From there, he went on to play two and half years of junior hockey in both the NAHL and the USHL. His team won the USHL Championship before he moved on to play four years of college hockey at Cornell University. After graduating from Cornell, he went on to play professional hockey, and is entering his sixth full season of pro this coming year.

    While he continues to enjoy playing hockey professionally, he also loves coaching, and passing all he has learned about goaltending, hockey, and life onto other goalies

Will Burgess

Director of Sports Performance

  • Coach Will Burgess is a highly accomplished Athletic Development and Performance professional with 23+ years in the field. He has extensive experience working with athletes of all levels of sport both in the United States and internationally. He possesses a comprehensive understanding of the unique demands and challenges faced by individuals in different sports. His expertise lies in designing and implementing effective training programs that enhance movement quality, speed, power, strength and overall performance. In coordination with physical development, he emphasizes mental toughness and resilience. Utilizing latest research and training methodologies, his athletes are provided with cutting-edge techniques that produce tangible results. In addition to training, Will's experience extends to performance testing and athlete assessments. He offers regular professional development clinics and has been a consultant for many professional clubs, academies, federations and leagues in the areas of performance optimization. Coach Will is a Louisiana native who graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama and is a former college and arena football player. Will currently trains the Birmingham Bulls Hockey team. He is also the owner of Weightroom USA, LLC., hosts seasonal training camps and manages professional athletes remotely. Throughout his many years of service, Coach Will Burgess has had a positive impact on the careers of many athletes, helping them achieve their potential in sport and life. He stands as a trusted and respected professional.

Kelly Berg

Director of Dietetics

  • Kelly is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) from the Chicagoland area with a decade of clinical food service experience in addition to clinical dietetics, nutrition research, and community involvement. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Food, Nutrition, and Dietetics from Illinois State University. Currently, Kelly works as an Assistant Professor at UAB teaching future dietitians and running the department’s metabolic research kitchen.

    Kelly enjoys working with an array of people to help reach and maintain their health and nutrition goals. In her spare time she counsels and enlightens others on the importance and power of nutrition.

Chuck Thuss

Life Coach

  • Chuck is a former professional hockey goaltender that played eight years pro in the old International Hockey League, American Hockey League, and East Coast Hockey League. After his playing days came to an end, Chuck spent the following two years as an assistant coach for the ECHL’s Mississippi SeaWolves. While playing and coaching, Chuck was also busy building his business, Southern Sports Supply, which he sold in 2011.

    Before turning pro, Chuck attended Miami University (Ohio) graduating with a double major in Health and Sports Studies with a minor in Coaching. As a walk-on, Chuck worked his way up the depth chart and earned a scholarship his senior year, along with several league (CCHA) and team awards including goalie of the year, CCHA All-League, Miami University Athlete of The Year, team most valuable player and being named 1st Team All American. He was also the recipient of the Terry Flanagan Award honoring a player for perseverance, dedication, and courage while overcoming severe adversity.

    Chuck has also coached on the international hockey stage, serving as the head coach and co-head coach for Team USA at The World Championships of Inline Hockey and The World Games. He helped guide Team USA to a bronze medal and five gold medal victories. He was also awarded the United States Olympic Committee Volunteer Coach of The Year award in 2011.

    Chuck is the founder and CEO of Compassionate Connection. As a professional speaker and a certified Life, Relationship and Spiritual Coach, Chuck works with active and retired elite athletes assisting them to “Empower the Greatness Within”. He has walked the walk so he can talk the talk. Chuck is also the co-founder and host of the podcast Warriors Unmasked.

    Born in Strathroy, Ontario, Chuck now resides in Mobile, Alabama with his wife Jamie and daughters, Bethany and Brooke. He enjoys playing golf, reading, working out, and spending time with his family.
